Flinders Island is the main island of the Furneaux group, a collection of 52 islands that stretch across Bass Strait. It has a thriving rural community that produces sheep and wool, cattle, crayfish, abalone, poppies and Cape Barren geese. It is also home to a very diverse wildlife with over 120 species of bird. Day 1: Launceston – Flinders Island You will be transferred to Launceston Airport for your flight to Flinders Island. Relax before dinner at your hotel in the township of Lady Barron, when we’ll sample some of the culinary delights for which Flinders Island is famous. Hotel: Furneaux Tavern, Flinders Island, 2 nights. D Day 2: Darling Ranges – East Coast We begin by touring the coast road to Trousers Point then drive through the Darling Ranges to Walkers Hill Lookout. We’ll travel to Emita to visit the museum, which provides an insight into the early history of the island and its inhabitants, and view the surrounding sheltered beaches. We return to our hotel via Castle Rock and the East Coast. B L D |
Day 3: North East River – Melbourne This morning travel to the northern-most tip of the Island and view the tidal estuary of the North East River. On our way we’ll visit the Vinegar Hill Lookout, Sawyers Bay and Mt. Tanner Lookout. Try your hand at finding a ‘Killiecrankie Diamond’ on the beach and take some time to explore the rock pools and granite bluffs. Later you will be transferred to Flinders Island Airport for your flight to Melbourne (Essendon Airport). B L |
