Hobart is the capital of Tasmania and was founded in 1804 as a convict site where the worst of the British and colonial criminals were sent. Hobart straddles two banks of the Derwent River and is backed onto by Mt Wellington. Today there are many reminders of the city’s penal history and many of the fine old buildings built in that time are still standing. There are over 90 historic buildings in Hobart that are listed by the National Trust. Hobart has all but missed the explosive growth of the mainland capital cities and has a relatively small population of 130,000. This has helped the city retain a great deal of its charm and beauty, without the normal urban sprawl and hustle. The city is quite compact and easy to get around and MT Wellington provides some truly spectacular views of the city and surrounding countryside. In the last week of every year, the Sydney to Hobart yacht race fires the city up into a festive mood, but for most of the year, visitors can relax and enjoy the history, charm and great hospitality that Hobart has to offer.
With entertainment, dining, nightclubs, budget accommodation and discounted tours and attractions Hobart is a great place to come and visit when you are backpacking around. Many of the restaurants and cafés around Hobart offer great tasting meals for next to nothing.... you can choose from take away, a la carte dining or buffet style lunches and dinner you will never go hungry. Hobart accommodation places are endless with dorm rooms and budget hotel rooms all offering quality and comfortable places to stay for your holiday in Hobart, Tasmania.
In the evenings, Hobart comes alive with street performers and artists alike. Restaurants, cafés and bars call everyone in from the cold where you can listen to an Irish Folk Band in front of a log fire or shoot pool in the front bar of one of Australia's oldest pubs and of course with a cascade in hand. There is much more to Hobart than meets the eye so give yourself a few days at least. If you like cross country bike riding Maria Island is the place. Located 15km off the coast from Spring Beach the entire island is a National Park with plenty of cross country trails. The Tasman Peninsula lies South East of Hobart and the drive is picturesque to say the least. Port Arthur which lies at the very end of the peninsula is a popular tourist destination and from here you can travel by boat to the Isle of the Dead. Visit the Devils Kitchen and blowhole to the south.
Hobart is a happening place, with old buildings, tourists, and locals. It has the usual city feel to it, and is lovely to walk around in. Salamanca place is a must. Hiding behind other buildings this is an outdoor area with restaurants and some shops and a big pond. On Friday nights there is the live music by locals in another hidden away courtyard. Here they start early (at about 4 p.m. to about 7:30 p.m.) and they sell some drinks, while you can listen to the local band and even enjoy dancing on the dancing floor if you like.
