Hobart is the capital of Tasmania. It is located in the south of the Island and on the banks of the Derwent River. Mount Wellington lies on its western side and the Derwent Valley and New Norfolk extend away to the north. Tasmania is geographically compact so Hobart is an ideal base from which to take tours to the surrounding areas of interest. Hobart has its roots in Australia’s convict past and this shows everywhere you go. Constitution dock and Salamanca place in the centre of the city is nearly all a reminder of its convict past with historical stone buildings all around. The dock comes alive each year at the completion of the annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race when all the competing yachts are rafted together in the dock and the celebrations are felt throughout the entire city.
Day Tours are available to many destinations from Hobart. Port Arthur on the east coast is one place every tourist must visit. Here lie the ruins of Tasmania’s first convict settlement. After crossing Eaglehawk Neck, a narrow isthmus leading to Port Arthur, you are immediately transported back into Tasmania’s convict past. It is easy to see and feel the hardship of the lives of those poor souls who were transported here so long ago to live a life of misery and despair. Other trips will transport you to see the wild beauty of Bruny Island or the magnificent vista from the summit of Mt Wellington. Hobart is also a great place to hire a camper van or motor home and spent a week or two exploring one of the world’s most beautiful islands.
It is less than a two hour drive to Launceston on the north coast so everything in the island is within easy reach. It is not necessary to spend many hours driving to reach your next destination as it is on the mainland. Within easy reach you will find pristine rainforest, wild rivers and spectacular mountain lakes. The island is dotted with historical villages, antique and craft stores, cafes and restaurants. There are hundreds of places to visit and enjoy.
