Tasmanian North Coast
Tasmania’s North Coast lies along its boundary with Bass Straight. The main city is Launceston which lies on the Tamar River and is centrally located. To the East of Launceston is Devon port which is the terminal for the Bass Straight ferry from the mainland. Along the northern coast lie a number of villages and towns that are all worth a visit and in the nearby hinterland are a maze of forests, mountains, lakes and rivers. There are so many places you should visit along the north coast you should allow two or three days of your stay.
Furthest to the east is Bridport which is a beautiful little fishing village. In the hinterland around Launceston and the Tamar Valley there are many natural attractions. You should visit Cataract Gorge and take a cruise on the river. The Tamar valley is also an important wine growing region and it is a must to visit some of the local wineries and try out their produce. There are also many historical sights to visit and the quality of the local restaurants and cafes is legendary.
To The east of Launceston are the towns of Burnie and Stanley. The Nut at Stanley is well worth a visit and you can ride by cable car to its summit and admire the magnificent coastal and Bass Straight views. There are also a number of day trips available in the area including one to visit the local seals. There is also an excellent Seaquarium in Stanley which is worth visiting.
On the North Coast of Tasmania you are never far from its interior and there is always a surprise not far away. The whole state is noted for its natural beauty, its rainforest, rivers, lakes and streams. Trout abound and the keen fisherman will be delighted by its offerings.
